At Scout Road our vision is for all children to gain the skills, knowledge, and attitudes they need to flourish and succeed as they move forward in life, and to develop in a culture embodied by our values of resilience, positivity, and determination. At our last Ofsted inspection our academy was judged to be good, and our academic results are regularly above national average in both key stages. Trustees recently recruited a highly effective and capable Principal who shares the Board's aspiration for the academy to provide an outstanding quality of education for all.

The Board of Trustees is currently recruiting for a Chair to lead and provide it with clear direction to challenge, support and contribute to the strategic leadership of the school.

The role of the Trustee Board is to:

  1. ensure clarity of vision, ethos, and strategic direction.
  2. hold executive leaders to account for the educational performance of the academy and its pupils and the performance management of staff.
  3. oversee the financial performance of the academy and make sure its money is well spent.
  4. ensure the voices of stakeholders are heard.

Ideally you will have senior leadership experience and an interest in education and improving the life chances of children. If you also have governance experience all the better.

The role is voluntary but demands a strong commitment and the ability to devote the time necessary to carry out all responsibilities well. This varies but is estimated at c.7 hours per week. The term of office is four years.  However, the role provides a unique opportunity to make a positive contribution to the community, develop a real sense of personal achievement, make a lasting difference to the education of children at our academy and develop new skills and experiences to add to your CV.

No experience in the education sector is required. Full training will be provided along with a substantial handover period with the incumbent Chair.

To perform the role well as Chair of Trustees you will be expected to provide strategic leadership including:

  • setting the culture of the Trustee Board, balancing and valuing both the responsibilities of support and challenge.
  • ensuring the Trustee Board sets a clear vision and strategy for the Trust and acts strategically, focusing on the academy’s key priorities.
  • developing effective and professional working practices with school leaders which are collaborative and mutually supportive.
  • ensuring the Board has the required skills, knowledge, and commitment to govern well and acts reasonably in line with its agreed code of conduct.
  • ensuring the smooth and effective running of Board meetings through focused agendas, effective chairing, and monitoring of agreed actions.
  • ensuring the Board has a good knowledge of the Trust and has mechanisms in place to obtain and listen to the views of all stakeholders.
  • ensuring the Trust complies with the Academies Financial Handbook and provides effective financial management and control.
  • playing a leading role in employment matters as required by the adopted procedures of the Trust e.g. grievance, disciplinary, capability.
  • where required, representing the Trustee Board, and acting as the first point of contact and respondent in matters raised by external partners and bodies.

We encourage applications from all members of society, regardless of background, gender, ethnicity, disability, or age (providing you are over 18). We are also committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expect all Trustees to share this commitment. All Trustees are therefore subject to a criminal record check from the Disclosure and Barring Service.
