Staying Safe

Bike Safety

Upper Key Stage 2 children will have the opportunity to take part in the Bikeablity programme. Bikeablity is today’s cycle training programme. It’s like cycling proficiency, but better! The programme teaches children how to gain practical skills and understand how to cycle on today’s roads.

Looking after your teeth

Health professionals or teachers will teach children how to look after their teeth properly – and what happens if they don’t!

Better living team

We hold an annual 'Healthy Body Week' in school.

Do you know how many spoonfuls of sugar are in a can of fizzy drink? Children will learn all about hidden sugar in foods and the dangers of a diet high in sugar. Children also take part in a series of fun activities and an assembly to increase their awareness of healthy living.

Internet Safety

We have an annual Internet safety awareness programme for the whole school and it is built into many other IT lessons.

If you have any worries or concerns around internet safety please don't hesitate to call us for advice.  A good source of up to date information is 'The UK Safer Internet Centre'.

Please find information about 'Creating Digital Confidence' and 'Talking about Cunning People'

Sex education

Teachers will teach sex education within the 'Relationships' unit of PSHE. Please see our long term plan below for an overview of content within each class. This is usually taught within the summer term. Parents will be given advance warning of it being taught in class. Parents have the right to withdraw their child from sex education lessons (but not the science lessons which teach about reproduction in animals and not the relationships education - again, the plans are shown below within the long term PSHE plan). Health professionals are sometimes invited to come into school to deliver a programme of sex education and sexual health. Parents will always be given prior warning of these visits.

Drug and alcohol awareness

Children in upper Key Stage 2 learn about the effects of drug and alcohol directly from a former abuser. This programme is delivered professionally in an age appropriate manner.

Fire Safety

The fire service offer a unit of lessons and accompanying resources which teachers use within class. We aim to highlight this area of the curriculum with a visit from the fire engine (complete with accompanying fire officers!).

Road Safety

Annual Road safety week is highlighted in assembly and in class. We also take advantage of our trips beyond the school gate to highlight the importance of road safety to children. Children learn how and where is the safest place to cross a road. We ask that parents / carers support our work by repeating the same messages at home.

Water Safety

Children take part in an annual update of how to keep themselves safe around water; this is all linked to their swimming lessons which take place in Y4 and Y5.

NSPCC PANTS Programme

The Underwear Rule from the NSPCC is a simple way to help parents and schools keep their children safe from abuse by teaching them that:
• their body belongs to them
• they have a right to say no

• they should always tell an adult if they’re upset or worried.

Safety within the National Curriculum

Please see our PSHE (Personal, Social, Health Education) long term plan for the whole school. We have outlined which topics are taught within each class.
